Message from Chair

As the newly elected Chair of the Township of Hamilton Police Services Board, I am pleased to welcome you to this website which will be an ongoing venture between our Board, the Northumberland Detachment OPP and the community of the Township of Hamilton.

In 2006, the Township of Hamilton Municipal Council entered into an agreement with the Solicitor General for the provision of police services by the Ontario Provincial Police. At this time, a Police Advisory Committee was formed. In 2007, this Committee became a full legislated Police Board. Under Ontario's Police Services Act, the Board has a duty to ensure that effective and efficient police services, including law enforcement and crime prevention are provided to the citizens of Hamilton Township.

The Township of Hamilton Police Services Board is a five member civilian Board that oversees the provision of policing services in the Township. As civilian members who represent the public's interests, the Police Services Board is committed to a high quality of community-based policing and excellence in police governance. The Board recognizes the challenges to law enforcement created by a changing environment, demographic shifts, emerging technologies and evolving crime trends and patterns.

Since its inception, the Board has had the opportunity to examine various police related issues as well as travelling throughout the Township to establish policing priorities for its Business Plan. This resulted in the OPP’s Business Plan and Commitments stated in this website specific for the Township of Hamilton.

In 2010, the Board will prepare a new Business Plan, in consultation with the Detachment Inspector and the citizens of Hamilton Township to determine policing objectives and concerns in the coming years.

Throughout this website, you will find further information on the Police Services Board that serves the Township of Hamilton and links to the Ontario Provincial Police. As well as policy initiatives of the Board, you will find the OPP’s monthly crime statistics which are updated on a regular basis. Members of the Police Board, short biographies, the Board role and responsibilities, the schedule of monthly Board meetings, agendas and meeting minutes, the qualifications and process for joining the Board and annual reports to Council are also included.

I am proud of my colleagues on the Police Services Board for their ongoing support and dedication to public service as well as the officers of the Ontario Provincial Police, Northumberland Detachment for their professionalism and willingness to work together for the benefit of the residents of the Township. With the support of the citizens in Hamilton Township, the Police Services Board is confident of meeting future policing
challenges in the years ahead.

Jennifer Cole
Chair, Township of Hamilton Police Services Board
